- Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic form of inflammation – a seronegative spondyloarthropathy. As episodes of inflammation repeat, the space around the ligaments between adjacent vertebrae becomes ossified. Eventually, the intervertebral spaces become less flexible, becoming a very stiff, bamboo-like shape.
